The presence of mold or mildew is a symptom of a larger construction or maintenance problem. While moisture is essential to the growth of mold and mildew, its source is not always easy to track down.

Molds can produce allergens, toxins and irritants, even when dormant, leading to health problems in susceptible people. Contributing factors include condensation, improperly maintained ductwork or water pipes, leaks, slow air circulation, improper humidity control, low surface temperature, and even some indoor plants.

To help building professionals create healthy, comfortable spaces, USG offers two forms of antimicrobial protection. These ceilings are designed to stand up to extremes of heat and humidity, conditions that not only can affect their appearance but may also foster the growth of mold and mildew.

USG ceiling panels and tiles with ClimaPlus™ performance are specially formulated to endure environments with up to 100% relative humidity and temperatures up to 104 °F. These panels carry a limited warranty against visible sag for up to 30 years when installed in a Donn® brand suspension system.

USG’s Mold and Mildew Solutions

ClimaPlus Superior Performance panels.
Face and back surfaces feature a patented antimicrobial treatment that provides broad-spectrum control for mold/mildew, and fungi over the warranty period. Controlled laboratory tests in accordance with ASTM D3273¹ and evaluated per ASTM D3274² have demonstrated the effectiveness of USG panels with ClimaPlus Superior Performance compared to standard, untreated ceilings.

ClimaPlus Inherent Performance panels.
Panels are formulated to inherently resist the growth of mold and mildew.

1. Standard Test Method for Resistance to Mold on the Surface of Interior Coatings in an Environmental Chamber. Note that this ASTM lab test is not intended to predict long term mold resistance and may not accurately represent the mold performance of building materials in actual use. Given unsuitable project conditions during storage, installation or after completion, any building material can be overwhelmed by mold. To manage the growth of mold, the best and most cost-effective strategy is to protect building products from water exposure during storage and installation and after completion of the building. This can be accomplished by using good design and construction practices. For details, see Testing for Mold Resistance (WB2420).

2. Standard Test Method for Evaluating Degree of Surface Disfigurement of Paint Films by Microbial (Fungal or Algal) Growth or Soil and Dirt Accumulation.
